Do Root Canals hurt?

I just got home from the dentist, he said i will need a root canal tomorrow because he had put a filling in there too close to a nerve a couple yeats ago.
So basically tomorrow he is just removing the nerve. I have at least 3 fillings before, does it hurt much/ or more than fillings?
Answer:
yeah. Any dental work/surgery hurts. You just gotta accept that fact. But know that you will feel so much better once it's done. And you'll be perscribed plenty of pain meds to get you through the first few rough days. And you'll be okay. I just got my wisdom teeth out about a month ago. All 4 and they were all impacted. And it hurt, but the medication helps...And make sure you get waited on hand and foot by your family/loved ones.. :-) thats the best part!Good Luck!
yes they hurt, you are numb like with fillings but if the nerve is still alive the numbness doesn't cover all the pain from the removal of the nerve!
no, they don't hurt as bad as some people lead on... what hurt me more was that the dentist tore up my gums.
No if the dentist numbs the gums than no way it will hurt.
No, you will be numb, just like when you get a filling. If he is doing a root canal, then you are going to need a crown on that tooth. It might be a little sensitive around the gum line when he preps for the crown, but that's about it. You won't have any more feeling in that tooth since the nerve will be gone. Every tooth that is treated for a root canal, eventually has to be prepped for a crown, due to the tooth is weaker and more fragile, and will eventuall break off because the root is gone (it's like a foundation).
i am 13 and i had a root canal done when i was 11 (long story short, i cracked my tooth, doesn't matter how it happened, it happened, can't change it now) and i went 2 the
dental hospital(i h8888888888888 needles) and they knocked me out(my front right tooth). this info is not very useful, but lots of people have to have root canal, you're not alone. just grit your teeth and do it, if you don't it might get worse and you will have to have the poor tooth out! I had 3 teeth out for a brace two weeks ago, your gums hurt like hell!
You do not want that! You have probably had it done by now but this info could be useful to other people on the site. Just do it! have a bunny to cheer you all up!

in the first visit your dentist will give you a local anesthesia so the only thing you will feel is the numbness like everybody told you , later when he/she cleans all the root canals and removes the pulp tissue(nerve) you will feel nothing , even without anesthesia ,generally you will feel better visit after visit.
I must say for myself it didn't hurt because it wasn't infected yet. Besides everybody threshold of pain is different.
Root canals, from what I understand, are the result of decay within a given tooth that effect the nerve. In my case, I had a cavity that was really deep and even after I had a filling put in it continued to decay almost all the way to the jaw bone. The explanation that I got from the dentist is that the nerve of my tooth had died and it needed to be removed as well as the decay and infection inside of my tooth.Basically what he did was go inside my tooth, take all of the decay out, clean the four canals of my tooth, made a mold of my real tooth and then put a temporary cap back in my tooth. After a couple of weeks the permanent cap arrived in his office and he simply took off the temporary and replaced it with the permanent cap.As far as the operation itself, I was given a local anestetic and I was awake through the whole thing. I felt no pain at all and I even drove home from the dentist's office.I've had two root canal operations, one without dental insurance and one with it, and it can be very expensive. When I had it done without insurance the whole procedure, including the permanent cap, cost about $1,300. Believe me it was not fun to have to pay that but you need to have this operation done.If you wait too long the tooth can become infected, like mine did, and it can spread to other parts of your body and cause serious complications. I waited about two and a half years before I finally had my second root canal done.

The quality of a root canal has to do with the dentist, his equipment, and his specialty. Root canals require crowns, so you’re looking at a minimum of $1,000 in treatment. MINIMUM. However, if it’s a front tooth, you’re pretty safe. If it’s a back tooth or decayed tooth then you should see a specialist and not just your regular dentist. Its only $200-300 more. Also take a look at these articles:
